Review & Giveaway: The Life O'Reilly By Brian Cohen

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!
The Life O'Reilly, A Novel By Brian Cohen

Here's what the back of the book says:

At once a bittersweet love story and a young lawyer's journey of self-discovery, this auspicious debut delivers an emotional wallop and will move readers in unexpected ways.

On the outside, Nick O'Reilly has it all: a high-flying legal career, as a partner of an elite Wall Street law firm, and financial security, with an apartment overlooking Central Park. Having grown up in a working-class family, as far back as Nick can remember this was his dream. But at the age of thirty-six, after several years of sacrificing his personal life for professional gain, Nick has started to ponder his future and consider the mark he wants to leave on society both professionally and personally--his legacy.

After being chastised in the press for turning a cold shoulder to the community, the firm calls upon Nick to help rehabilitate its image by handling its first pro bono case. Nick is asked to represent Dawn Nelson, a domestic violence victim who is fighting for custody of her young son, Jordan. A far cry from Nick's specialty of defending the misdeeds of Corporate America, it is up to Nick to set Dawn and Jordan on a path to a better life. But Nick gets much more than he signed on for, as Dawn forces him to reassess his life choices and, ultimately, be true to himself. Only when Nick finally realizes what is truly important in life does he face his toughest--and possibly final--challenge: a battle for his own survival.

Exploring the flaws of being human and the importance of controlling one's own destiny, The Life O'Reilly reminds us of how precious life is and how quickly and tragically it can change. Written with great empathy, The Life O'Reilly is an emotional and unforgettable tale that will challenge one's expectations of the modern love story and introduces a poignant and sensitive new voice in fiction.

Here's What I have to Say:
Though it starts out a little slow, this novel takes you on a realistic journey through the life of Nick O'Reilly. I instantly fell for Nick, as I am sucker for "the good guy". And ultimately Nick is a good guy who's slightly misguided choices lands him in a life he doesn't want. I was literally brought to tears, both of joy and sadness, by the rapid, but again realistic, turn of events. It is not often that an author can make a work of fiction so plausible, and still entertaining to read. This book reminds me of The Friday Night Knitting Club, by Kate Jacobs, in that right away I wanted the main character to get what they wanted and to be happy. The book does get a little intense in a few spots (with some language) but ultimately a great love story about family, friends and the meaning of life. This book seriously made me do an assessment of me and mine and I think it will have you do the same. The only negative I can think of is that at times the descriptions (of appearance, and surroundings) can be a bit long-winded.

  4. Hi there!

Yes, I believe that statement a I am living proof of it. I have written about how I fulfilled some of my dreams late in my life, including this story of how I finally, finally became a flutist: So what's the deal with the flute, anyway?"

  11. I don't feel like it's ever too late to find happiness -- but I also believe that too many people think that there is always MORE happiness just around the corner, and they don't appreciate the happiness they already have.

  13. I don't think it is ever too late to find true happiness. Besides, what makes you happy at 20, probably won't be the same thing that makes you happy at 40.

  57. Being a true optimist, yes I agree wholeheartedly that it is never too late to find happiness. And, with all the shows, talk, etc about the afterlife, maybe even then you can find true happiness. (Well, according to many religions, that is when you really do find true happiness...) But the earthbound kind, well...you hear about 80 and 90 year olds being reunited with a youth sweetheart, and being deliriously happy.....so a big YES.

(And you thought that this novel was long winded! Looks like I would make a good match for winning a copy of the Life O'Reilley!)
