Review: The Law of the Garbage Truck by David J. Pollay

The Law of the Garbage Truck by David J. Pollay
Book Description: Twenty years ago, while riding in the back of a New York City taxicab, David J. Pollay narrowly escaped a life-threatening car crash. The driver who almost caused the major accident started yelling at David’s taxi driver, who remarkably just smiled, waved and wished the other driver well before he and David drove away. David asked how the cabbie could remain so calm. His reply spawned the defining principle of The Law of the Garbage Truck and left author, David J. Pollay awestruck.

His driver said: “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment…And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. So when someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally…move on.”

You can purchase this book on Amazon

About the Author: David J. Pollay, B.A., M.A.P.P., is on a mission to increase happiness, success, and civility in life and business. He is the author of The Law of the Garbage Truck: How to Respond to the People Who Dump on You, and How to Stop Dumping on Others, published by Sterling Publishing (release date: October 5, 2010). David’s The Law of the Garbage Truck is an international phenomenon that’s revolutionizing the way people relate to each other. “The Law” has been endorsed by psychologists, educators, business and spiritual leaders. Translated into forty-eight languages, David’s No Garbage Trucks! Pledge has been taken by people from more than one hundred countries. He is a syndicated columnist, popular blogger, and an internationally sought-after speaker and seminar leader whose work has been featured on NPR, Sirius Satellite Radio, ABC television, Univision, and in Crain’s New York Business, BusinessWeek Small Biz magazine, and newspapers around the world. He is a founding associate executive director of the International Positive Psychology Association, and a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. Here's What I think: What a concept! I love how relevant this book is to the world we live in today. I have long felt that no one can make you feel bad unless you let them. Pollay's book takes this to a whole other level and teaches you methods on how to make sure it doesn't happen. Civility is something that seems to have been lost in our countries value set. I don't understand it and work hard to not perpetuate it in my own children. But it is difficult when they see it happening around them so frequently. This is the sort of book that should be required reading for anyone with a sore expression on their face! An uplifting and life-changing book, The Law of Garbage is a must be for anyone that is unhappy with the negative path our world is traveling down.

He is president of The Momentum Project, LLC, a consulting organization focused on applying the Law of the Garbage Truck and the science of positive psychology to becoming happier and more successful in business and life. He has held leadership positions at Yahoo!, MasterCard, Global Payments, and AIESEC.
David holds a master’s degree of applied positive psychology (M.A.P.P.) from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University. He lives in Florida, with his wife and their two daughters.

Words like inspirational, spiritual and dead-on come to mind when I think about this book. What I loved most was that this book didn't just focus on the financial effects of our current economic crisis. Money can have far reaching effects on our lives. As I have said before, while a enjoy books that have Christian overtones, I do not like to feel like I am being preached at. Review: Get Positively Beautiful by Carmindy

Get Positively Beautiful by Carmindy
Book Description: According to a recent study, only 2% of women describe themselves as 'beautiful.' (Dove Global Study 'The Real Truth About Beauty: A Global Report', 2004) The media instructs women how to 'look ten years younger,' 'cover up wrinkles,' or 'get fuller, plumper lips.' And even makeup products play off women's insecurities, promising to conceal perceived flaws, define cheekbones, or make eyelashes fuller and longer. The underlying message? That there's something inherently wrong with the way women look and that they have to spend time, money, and energy keeping up with all the ways they should 'fix' themselves. About the Author: Every week, millions of viewers count on Carmindy to teach them about the latest makeup tips and tricks on TLC's hit show “What Not to Wear.” Her unique vision of empowering women through lip gloss has created an army of followers looking for ways to erase insecurities and enhance their natural beauty. Carmindy teaches women not only how to choose their best feature to focus on but also how to see only the positive and celebrate who they truly are. Here's What I think: Okay, I am not one of those people that wears makeup every single day. In fact I don't even normally wear it even one day every week. However, I am actively trying to make a change in this part of my life. So when the opportunity came to review this book I jumped on it. And boy am I glad I did. This book breaks it down to the simplest of terms and techniques. Carmindy essentially wipes your beauty knowledge from the slate and starts fresh. She gives some great emotional advice to start off and build from there by describing the tools and techniques. I love the photos - all of real people that she has "made-over" to look just fabulous. I know that I will be using this book as a reference for a long time.

In GET POSITIVELY BEAUTIFUL, makeup artist Carmindy from TLC's hit program What Not to Wear shows you how to change your mindset from negative fault-finding to a positive beauty philosophy. You learn how to find and focus on your best features and how to combat negative thoughts about your appearance. Carmindy demonstrates easy makeup techniques for eyes, brows, lashes, lips, cheeks, and skin, and how to adapt looks to different weather conditions and 'beauty moods.'

Since her Southern California childhood, Carmindy has dreamed of traveling the world doing makeup and meeting inspiring people. Through hard work and an unstoppable attitude, she's made that dream a reality. She's painted faces in the studios of Paris, on the beaches of Brazil, and on the streets of Havana. She's lived in Los Angeles, Milan, Miami, and now makes her home with her husband, Javier, in New York, where she has established herself as a top fashion makeup artist and a natural beauty revolutionary.
Carmindy's work can be seen on the editorial pages of leading magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Elle, InStyle, O, Essence, Self, Lucky, Seventeen, Marie Claire, and Glamour. Her commercial clients include Sally Hansen, Maybelline, Sephora, Clairol, Matrix, Avon, Aveeno, CoverGirl, Almay, Bath and Body Works, Crest Whitestrips, and Q-tips. She is the author of two fabulous beauty books titled The 5 Minute Face and Get Positively Beautiful. She has co-created a natural line of cosmetics called Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy available in drugstores nationwide.

 30-Day Method by Tracy Anderson
Book Description: Did you know muscles get bored, just like people do? And did you also know that there's a 9 out of 10 chance that you're working the wrong muscles when you exercise? With TRACY ANDERSON'S 30-DAY METHOD you don't have to worry--her unique workout will help you drop the weight and shrink your body in just 30 days.About the Author: Tracy Anderson has trained stars like Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Courteney Cox, Molly Sims, and Naomi Watts, among others. She was a professional dancer who experienced considerable weight gain, began to research her own workout methods to transform her body, and developed the Tracy Anderson Method. She owns studios located in NY and LA and shares her unique workouts through her successful DVDs and webinars.

Based on ten years of scientific research and experience getting not just herself, but A-list stars and everyday people, red carpet ready, Anderson has developed a unique 30-day diet and workout routine that reshapes the body and defies genetics to tone the muscles and drop the pounds. While most people incorrectly target their major muscle groups, like the bicep or hamstring, the focus should be on the smaller accessory muscles that can create a long, lean, balanced look--instead of bulked up look. Anderson's program is composed of a groundbreaking three-tiered approach, including a mat workout and cardio routine targeting the all-important accessory muscles, and an exclusive 30-day meal plan, complete with dozens of delicious recipes.
This comprehensive kick-start program is unlike any other workout on the market and it leaves no chance for anything but terrific, fast results!

Author's Website, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Here's What I think: This book is hugely praised by all sorts of celebrities and I can see why. The method is easy to follow, with lots of photos to explain different exercises. And there are lots of really yummy recipes like Orange Glazed Salmon and Baked Chicken with Broccoli. The book is divided into three sections: You are how you move, Getting kick-started and Tracy Anderson's 30-Day Method. Though there is a lot of background information on how she came up with the program and what not, once you get to the meat of the program it is really great information.

I thought this would be an interesting read and might help me out when my friends that do still date come to me for advice. And I was right. Each themed chapter - Like Dates from Hell and Lying - includes real life anecdotes from the dating world accompanied by the Hultin Ladies' tips and advice on how to avoid and/or overcome such travesties. It is a very light hearted look at real-life situations.  The stories range from funny to sad to particularly frightening. If you like to people watch, you would like this book. And I think that if you are looking for some help in the dating world, online or not, you would benefit from this book.

Review and Giveaway: The Pocket Therapist

The Pocket Therapist by Therese J. Borchard

What the book says: Whenever Therese Borchard was weathering a personal storm, and help was nowhere to be found, her one guiding light was the question, "What would a therapist say?" The result was a sort of therapy scrapbook for rough days--a quick reference for anyone who needs a dose of encouragement, support and tried and true ways to cope.

THE POCKET THERAPIST is a compact and accessible guide filled with techniques and advice to help combat everything from addictive behavior to negative thinking.

About the Author:
Therese Borchard is the author of the hit daily blog “Beyond Blue” on Beliefnet.com, which is featured weekly on The Huffington Post and was voted by PsychCentral.com as one of the top 10 depression blogs, and she moderates the popular depression support group, Beyond Blue, on Beliefnet’s social networking site. Therese is the editor of The Imperfect Mom: Candid Confessions of Mothers Living in the Real World, featured in Real Simple, Parenting, More, Working Mother, Psychology Today, Fit Pregnancy, the Chicago Tribune, and on Salon.com, and of I Love Being a Mom: Treasured Stories, Memories, and Milestones, a Target selection, and featured in Redbook, Parenting, BabyTalk, the Chicago Tribune, and the Detroit Free Press. With Michael Leach, she is co-editor of A Celebration of a Married Life and the national bestseller I Like Being Catholic. Her newest book, The Pocket Therapist, will be published by Hachette Book Group in April of 2010.

Therese has published articles in the Washington Post, Ladies’ Home Journal, Parenting, Guideposts, Publishers Weekly, the Baltimore Sun, and on PsychCentral.com, The Huffington Post, and Yahoo! She is becoming a go-to expert in the field of pop-psychology, recently quoted in The Wall Street Journal, O, and on CNN.com and Time.com. Her nationally syndicated column, “Our Turn,” is distributed biweekly by Catholic News Service. She appears monthly on Sirius Satellite Radio, is featured regularly on radio programs throughout the country, and has been a repeated guest on national television programs, such as "Fox and Friends" (Fox News Channel) and "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher" (ABC). She lives with her husband, Eric, and their two “spirited” children in Annapolis, Maryland.

Here's what I think:
This book is intended for woman in general but I think it especially applies to mothers. Motherhood can be an extremely emotional journey, each and every day. Borchard has put together snippets of information, set up almost as a daily readers, that touch on some many topics. In fact, I am reading it now as a daily reader and really enjoying it. Borchard's straight-forward and often cutting humor, brings light to otherwise dreary topics. As the book's description says, if you can't afford therapy this book is for you. It is just the right dose of help and humor. I know the Pocket Therapist will definitely be read often in my home, sometimes behind the bathroom door with children screaming for candy on the other side!

Review and Giveaway: Just Let Me Lie Down

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED!
Just Let Me Lie Down by Kristin van Ogtrop

What the book says: Kristin van Ogtrop knows she's lucky--fulfilling career, great husband, three healthy kids, and, depending on the hamster count, an impressive roster of pets. She also knows she is tired. Always. Using stories and insights from her own life, she provides a lexicon for the half-insane working mom. Anyone who has left a meeting to race to the Halloween parade immediately understands van Ogtrop's definition of "Kill the messenger" as "The action you must take in order to forget about the office for a time--that is, to remove your Blackberry/Treo/iPhone/whatever from your person and store it as far away as your neurotic self will allow.

About the Author:
Kristin van Ogtrop is the editor of Real Simple magazine and has held positions at Glamour, Vogue, Travel & Leisure, and Premiere. She lives outside New York City with her family.

Here's what I think:

What a treat, to have a fellow mom celebrate the trials of motherhood. van Ogtrop has found a way to make working mom relish their lives. Her witty repartee makes light of the unpleasant aspects of motherhood without diminishing them. This is a book you will want to keep close at hand for those much needed little pick-me-up moments. She makes it okay to not succeed at everything we attempt. I really identify with her style of motherhood and thoroughly enjoyed the book! I think any mother with a sense of humor will truly enjoy this read.

BUY IT! You can buy your own copy of Just Let Me Lie Down by Krisitn van Ogtrop from Amazon.

Review: Mom-Over by Dana Wood

Mom-Over by Dana Wood
Here's what the book says:

mom·over (noun): mashup of "mom" and "makeover" minus the pressure to look like a total babe 24/7. (Unless that's what the mama wants, of course.) Holistic; encompasses mind, body and spirit. Nudges her to take primo care of herself, with zero guilt & tons of support. Beneficial to entire family.
Bring our your inner Momshell!
Okay, so every day since the baby was born has been a dirty sweats/no mascara/bad hair day kind of day. You don't need your mother to tell you it's time to lose that just-home-from-the-hospital-look before it sticks forever. You've got Dana Wood, patron saint of stylish new moms everywhere, to show you how to take world-class care of yourself -- drumroll please -- after the baby's born, and beyond!
In this sensibly chic guide, Wood reveals the secrets of surviving the emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges that emerge in that bleary-eyed, sleep- and time-deprived first year. In the trademark Momover style popularized in her eponymous blog, she provides the motivation you need to hop off the new-mommy self-pity train, and get with a new and improved post-baby program. What's more, she proves that doing it right by yourself is just another way of doing right by your baby.

mom·over: Because centered, happy you = centered, happy baby!

Read an Excerpt

About the Author:
Dana Wood is a mother, wife, and the writer of "Momover," an online column that explores the collision of age and first-time mommyhood. Currently the senior fashion features editor of W, Wood has served as the beauty director of W and the health and beauty director of Cookie. In her twenty-plus years of journalism, she has also written for numerous national publications, including Glamour, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, Women's Health, Self, and People. Learn more about Wood and her her popular blog at Momover.net. She lives in New York, NY.
Here's what I say:
I have long said that the mom needs to be relaxed and happy in order for the baby to feel happy. The book is broken up into three parts: Getting it together mentally, Getting it together physically, and Getting it together spiritually. Although you could totally read this book cover to cover as you would a novel, it is also broken up into very specific segments of things we almost all encountered in those first few months as a new mom. I seriously wish I had had this book with  my first child. Although I was, and still am, a pretty laid back mom, I still put myself through things that I could have avoided. Which is why my absolute favorite part of the book is the occasional "reserve the right to..." tip boxes, some are fun some are series but they are virtual get out of jail free cards. All those things that you feel guilty about should not really be a source of guilt. For example, my absolute favorite one was the second one which reads:
What better advice can you give a new mom? And I love the natural flow of the book. It really reads like a girlfriend chatting with you over coffee. I think this book would make a perfect baby shower gift to any mommy-to-be, as long as she likes to laugh at witty repartee.
...hang a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your bedroom door, even when your mother-in-law or dear old Aunt Bessie is pitching in to help with the baby. Sure, the first time might feel a bit awkward, perhaps even a little rude, but you'll get used to it. Better yet, so will they.

These suggestions will help you savor the exotic, while keeping calories, fat, cholesterol and sodium under control.

Chinese
Look for: Stir-fried (ask to have it prepared in little or no oil) or steamed dishes with lots of vegetables, steamed rice, poached fish, and hot and sour soups.

Avoid: Dishes with large amounts of butter or oil, such as baba ghanouj (eggplant appetizer) and baklava (dessert made with phyllo dough, butter, nuts and honey). To limit sodium, avoid olives, anchovies and feta cheese.

Italian
Look for: Marinara (tomatoes with garlic and onions), Marsala (based in wine), clam sauce and pasta primavera with fresh vegetables and a small amount of oil. Simply prepared fish and chicken dishes also are good choices.
Avoid: Pasta stuffed with cheese or fatty meat and dishes with cream or butter sauces. Veal scaloppine and parmigiana (cooked with Parmesan cheese) contain added fat.

Japanese
Look for: Steamed rice, soba or udon noodles, yakisoba (stir-fried noodles), yakitori (chicken teriyaki), shumai (steamed dumplings), tofu, sukiyaki, kayaku gohan (vegetables and rice).
Avoid: Shrimp or vegetable tempura, chicken katsu, tonkatsu (fried pork), shrimp agemono, fried tofu (bean curd).

Mexican
Look for: Grilled fish, shrimp and chicken with salsa made of tomato, chilies and onion. Order corn tortillas (they're lower in fat and calories than are flour tortillas) as long as they aren't deep fried. For a side dish, order rice or beans (black, pinto, refried). Make sure your side dishes aren't cooked with fat or lard -- ask your server about this.
Avoid: Dishes with large amounts of cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. Chips also can add a lot of fat and calories.

Here's What I Say:
This book is a step by step plan to a healthier you. My very favorite aspect of this book is that it is a Lifestyle makeover, not just focused on any one thing (exercise, nutrition, emotions, etc.). The main focus of the book is trading your unhealthy habits for healthy ones. Since I have a degree in Exercise Science I was able to review this book from a clinical perspective. I have spent a lot of time trying to find that perfect balance between real life and a healthy lifestyle. Although I am just starting out (yes I am truly going to give this program a try), I really think that this is a program that could work for a vast majority of people. It is general enough to be adapted to just about anyone's current situation, yet specific enough to guide you on an easily followed path. I think if you are truly ready to get in shape and get healthy you should check out this book. The huge amount of information in this book will make it a frequent reference source in the years to come. And -huge bonus - the proceeds from this book go to support medical education and research at the Mayo Clinic.
Do you have this book? Have you been on the Mayo Clinic Diet? What do you think?

Disclaimer: Although I did receive a copy of this book from FSB Associates (Thanks so much Anna S. ), I was in no way compensated to post this review. These are my real thoughts.

Mayo Clinic is the first and largest integrated, not-for-profit group practice in the world. Doctors from every medical specialty work together to care for patients, joined by common systems and a philosophy that the needs of the patient come first. Over 3,600 physicians and scientists and 50,000 allied staff work at Mayo, which has sites in Rochester, Minn.; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Scottsdale/Phoenix, Ariz. Collectively, Mayo Clinic treats more than 500,000 patients a year.

For more than 100 years, millions of people from all walks of life have found answers at Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic works with many insurance companies, does not require a physician referral in most cases and is an in-network provider for millions of people.

Review: Queen of Your Own Life by Kathy Kinney and Cindy Ratzlaff

Queen of Your Own Life by Kathy Kinney and Cindy Ratzlaff

Here's what the book says:
Discover the Seven Best Gifts You Can Give Yourself

Queen of Your Own Life is a philosophy, a decision and an invitation to happiness for women who have made the tough but rewarding journey to the midpoint in their lives. Kathy Kinney (best known as Mimi on The Drew Carey Show) and Cindy Ratzlaff (marketing genius behind the launch of The South Beach Diet) have been best friends for more than thirty years, and have helped each other navigate the ups and downs of their lives with humor and grace.

In this entertaining and inspiring book, they share the tried-and-true techniques they call "the seven best gifts a woman can give herself." They reveal how they learned to value themselves just the way they are -- women in full bloom, sensual, vibrant, wise and more beautiful than ever -- and they'll show you how you can, too.

With these seven gifts you'll discover how to:
•Claim your beauty and feel your power
•Clean your mental closet and find your queen voice
•Admire yourself for who you've become
•Build deep, fulfilling friendships with other women
•Establish firm boundaries that will strengthen all your relationships
•Learn the simple trick to finally being happy
•Place the crown firmly on your head
With humor, comfort and inspiration, Queen of Your Own Life offers easy step-by-step actions to blast away at the societal tall tale that young is beautiful and old is just old. If you've been feeling that the best part of your life may be behind you, then this book will prove to you just how untrue that is, and that the door to being happy is not only never closed, but just waiting for you to fling it open. Remember, you don't have to be twenty to have your whole life ahead of you. Now is the time to become Queen of Your Own Life!

Here's what I say:
The book is cleverly laid out. Each chapter covers a different aspect of life that might be interfering with your ability to be happy. One thing I really enjoyed was that there are parts that are specifically written by Kathy or Cindy and listed as such. These sections give a personal insight that relates to the topic. Another wonderful part of the book are the Crown Jewels. These are inspirations, humorous or enlightening quotes from a vast variety of people. I really enjoyed the ease of this book. Often "self-help" books can be preachy. This is more like a friend chatting with you. I really enjoyed it and think it is a great read for the woman who enjoy a bit of humor with their help.
