Here's What I have to Say:
Though it starts out a little slow, this novel takes you on a realistic journey through the life of Nick O'Reilly. I instantly fell for Nick, as I am sucker for "the good guy". And ultimately Nick is a good guy who's slightly misguided choices lands him in a life he doesn't want. I was literally brought to tears, both of joy and sadness, by the rapid, but again realistic, turn of events. It is not often that an author can make a work of fiction so plausible, and still entertaining to read. This book reminds me of The Friday Night Knitting Club, by Kate Jacobs, in that right away I wanted the main character to get what they wanted and to be happy. The book does get a little intense in a few spots (with some language) but ultimately a great love story about family, friends and the meaning of life. This book seriously made me do an assessment of me and mine and I think it will have you do the same. The only negative I can think of is that at times the descriptions (of appearance, and surroundings) can be a bit long-winded.

June Book Club Discussion Questions

***SPOILER ALERT*** If you have not yet read this book but intend to you may want to finish it before you read the discussion questions. There are some spoilers herein!

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks

Book Club discussion questions: (the answers in pink are my own personal responses)

On a scale of 1 (lamer than lame) and 5(super fantastic) rate the following:

Style of Writing - 5 out of 5
Development of Characters - 4.5 out of 5
Flow of storyline - 4.5 out of 5
Over all book - 4.5 out of 5

Given the same circumstances, would you have made the same choice regarding hiding the illness that Steve did? I believe that I would do the same thing. It was the only way for them to love him for who he was and for him to know the real people his children had become. It is sad that they found out the way they did, but I think it was for the best. Ronnie, especially, will not have to go through life having to wonder what sort of relationship she could have had.
What was your most favorite part? When Steve boarded up the piano when Ronnie said she didn't want to see it anymore. He was doing whatever it took for her to know that he loved her more than those keys.
What was your least favorite part? Everything about Marcus. Once again their is just one character that drives me nuts. The sad part is that it is all out of jealousy. Marcus doesn't have the things the others have, and not to material, but faith, self-confidence, and happiness. And he just wants to make everyone as miserable as him.
What did you "not see coming"? Galadriel turning around. I was sure she was a lost cause, sadly. I was very happy to see that she was able to see the bigger picture after her accident. I was also a little surprised to learn the Marcus and his gang didn't just witness the fire, but actually started it.
Do you think Will made a good choice in transferring schools? I have to say that for the longest time "John" was my favorite Nicholas Sparks character (from Dear John) but Will might at least tie for my favorite. I love that he gave her the time to find her own way so that she would know she could before he came back to her.
What was the most important value Steve taught his children in this last summer? I think patience was the prevailing theme of the book. He taught them that when something really matters, you have to be patient with it. Patience is something I am constantly working on with myself, as well as trying to teach my children.
Will you read any more of Sparks' books? I have read several of Sparks' other books - Dear John, The Notebook, and A Walk to Remember. I really enjoy the realistic nature of his stories. It is very rarely ever a "Happily Ever After" and I love the morals he "teaches" without being preachy. I will definitely be reading more from him. I think the next I will choose is The Guardian.

I am now Starving for MORE Hunger Games

I was totally dragging my feet about reading The Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins. I was just reluctant because Young Adult books can be so hit and miss for me based on enjoyment and ability to finish the books! It is not always that the stories are not interesting, it just they are too, well, juvenile to hold my attention. Well finally, enough of my gal pals had insisted that I read it. Let me just put it this way, I finished the first one - Hunger Games - in 3 days and the second one - Catching Fire - in just over ONE day! Let me point out that they are both close to 400 pages each! But now I am stuck in an awful predicament!!! The last book in the trilogy - Mockingjay - doesn't come out until AUGUST 24th, 2010!!!!!!!!! And of course Collins ended Catching Fire in an incredible and practically perfect cliffhanger. I mean if you wanted to define "cliffhanger" by using a book example - Catching Fire would be it!! The world created by Collins is enthralling. You are drawn into this story right from the start. Each character is carefully developed. And the story has so many layers it is difficult not to sink right in! Oh and how cool is this - Hunger Games will be a major motion picture at some point next year!!

So here is a little bit about the titles: (PLEASE NOTE: The synopsis of each title gives a little bit of a spoiler as to the outcome of the previous title)

Hunger Games: Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place.

Catching Fire: Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.

Here's What I have to Say:
In the first book of the series - Seduce Me - the Legend Hunters are searching for Pandora's Box. In this installment the Legend Hunters have discovered a map to Atlantis. Max sets out on his single-minded mission, but is quickly derailed by the ultra sexy Sabine. She wants to deny her feeling but just can't as they are forced to work together to evade the third party intent on taking the map. The story in intriguing and steamy, but a little slow for my liking. The main characters are well developed but the supporting characters are left a little too mysterious.The third book in this series - Treasure Me - is due out in March of 2011
